Football at Queen was fun, but really difficult. I started with the 300mm, but when coupled with the 1,6 multiplication factor of my Canon 20d, I was not getting anything: I was too long. I switch back to the 70-200, but then I was too short. I went back o the 300mm, positioning myself way back from the action and then I got some great shots. The nice late afternoon light helped too!

When back to the computer, the sharpness of the 300mm prime lens totally blew out the 70-200. The blurred background I got with the 300mm also made a big difference to get great photographs. Until I get a second body, I’ll try to stick to the 300mm whenever it is possible to shoot sports!

Enough with the technical stuff, I must talk to you about the most amazing thing that happened to football: The Queen’s home coming field bashing tradition!

5 minutes before the end of the first half, all the alumni in the stadium can get to the running track that goes around the football field for the half time parade. What is suppose to happen is a nice parade of the alumni to get a salute from other people in the stands.

But…

But as soon as the whistle announce the end of the first half, 2000 violet painted young crazy people jump over the fences (with some poor security guy trying in vain to block them), get to the field and BASH the it with their university’s jacket for a good 5 minutes. Then they get to the side of the field, near the running track, to bash the ground to salute the alumni passing by them.

It’s crazy, it’s wild, it’s wonderful!

Who said Ontarians don’t know how to have fun???

Le football à Queen University était plaisant, mais très difficile. J'ai débuté avec le 300mm, mais lorsque couplé au facteur de multiplication de 1,6 de mon Canon 20D, je ne réussis pas à prendre des photos : j'étais trop long! Je me suis tourné vers la 70-200, mais j'étais alors trop court. Je suis donc retourné au 300mm en me positionnant plus en retrait du jeu. C'est là que j'ai enfin eu de bonnes images. La magnifique lumière de fin d'après-midi a beaucoup aidé aussi!

De retour à l'ordinateur, la netteté (sharpness) de la focale fixe de la 300mm laissait la 70-200 bien loin derrière. Le beau floutage de l'arrière-plan (blurred backgroud) obtenu avec la 300mm a aussi beaucoup aidé à obtenir de bonne photographie. En attendant d'avoir une deuxième caméra, je vais essayer de m'en tenir à la 300mm pour le sport!

Assez avec les trucs techniques, il est temps de vous parler du truc le plus amusant n'étant jamais arrivé au football : « La tradition du frappage sur le sol du retour à la maison de Queen » (The Queen’s home coming field bashing tradition - maudit que ça sonne mal en français!!)

5 minutes avant la fin de la demie, les anciens gradués (alumni) se massent sur la piste de course entourant le terrain de football. Pendant la demie, nous sommes alors censés assister à une parade où les gens dans les estrades rendent hommage par applaudissement aux graduées paradant autour du terrain.

Mais....

Mais aussitôt que le sifflet annonce la fin de la première demie, 2000 jeunes excités peint en violet saute par dessus la clôture (avec quelques pauvres agents de sécurité essayant de les en empêcher), se rende au milieu du terrain, et pendant 5 minutes FRAPPE le terrain à l'aide de leur manteau officiel de l'école. Ensuite, ils s'installent le long de la piste de course et frappent le sol pour rendre hommage à leur façon aux anciens qui les ont précédés et qui passent devant eux.

C'est fou, c'est dément, c'est merveilleux!
